Closet Solutions for Baltimore Rowhouses: Federal Hill, Canton, Fells Point and Beyond

Rowhouses were built before closets. Here is how designers add them without losing a bedroom.

A Baltimore rowhouse is typically 12 to 18 feet wide, two or three stories deep, and built between 1880 and 1930 when a wardrobe was furniture, not architecture. Renovators have added closets in every corner since, most of them shallow, single-rod and awkward. The good news is that rowhouses respond dramatically to custom systems because every inch counts.

The 18-inch reach-in

Most renovated Federal Hill and Canton bedrooms have a reach-in only 18 to 22 inches deep, too shallow for a standard 24-inch hanging rod facing forward. Designers we match use 14-inch shelving with front-facing hooks and pull-down rods, or turn the rod sideways with a wardrobe lift, and remove bifold doors in favor of a curtain or sliding barn door so the full width is usable.

The third-floor walk-in conversion

Three-story rowhomes often have a small third-floor bedroom that becomes a nursery, then an office, then nothing. Converting it to a walk-in dressing room with a wall of hanging, a drawer tower and a window seat is the most popular luxury project in the waterfront neighborhoods. Because the room is small, a floor-based laminate system with LED lighting typically lands between $6,000 and $12,000.

Under the stairs

The triangle under the main stair is the best pantry or coat closet in the house. A custom pull-out system with angled shelves converts it for $2,000 to $4,500 and makes the front-door drop zone disappear.

The roof-deck landing

Fourth-floor roof-deck access rooms have no storage and are where coolers, cushions and sports gear pile up. Shallow wall-hung cabinets and a bench with lift-up storage keep the landing clear.

Harbor East and Locust Point condos

Newer condos have decent bedroom closets but no pantry and no coat storage. Common projects are a full-height pantry wall beside the kitchen, a wardrobe-style built-in in the entry, and a wall bed in the second bedroom so it serves as office and guest room.

Logistics that matter in the city

  • Installers need a parking permit or a loading plan; ask the company how they handle it.
  • Materials come up narrow stairs, so panels are cut to 8 feet or shorter and assembled in place.
  • Brick party walls need masonry anchors; plaster over lath needs toggle anchors. Ask the installer which they will use.
  • Older rowhomes are rarely square; insist on an on-site measurement, not a photo estimate.
