Here is the typical timeline for a custom closet project in the Baltimore area, based on what partner companies tell us and what homeowners report.
Day 1: You request a consultation
You tell us the space, budget range and timeline. Within one business day we match you with a vetted designer whose company fits the project, and they contact you to schedule. Most consultations happen within a week; spring and September book faster.
Week 1: The 90-minute in-home consultation
The designer measures the closet, inventories what you own (yes, they count hanging items and shoes), asks how you get dressed, and sketches a layout on a tablet. Most companies show you a 3D rendering and a price before they leave. There is no obligation, but expect a same-day offer.
Week 1–2: Compare and revise
If we matched you with two or three companies, this is when you compare their designs side by side. Ask each for the same three things: the price after promotions, the material specification, and the warranty in writing. Revisions are normally free until the order releases to manufacturing.
Week 2: Sign and deposit
Standard terms are 50 percent at signing, balance at installation. Financing at zero percent for 12 to 36 months is common from the larger companies.
Week 2–8: Manufacturing
Laminate systems take two to four weeks. Wood veneer and painted finishes take six to ten. Companies that manufacture in Maryland (Closet America in Landover, several independents) tend to run shorter.
Install day
Empty the closet completely. Installers arrive in the morning, remove old shelving if agreed, mount rails or set floor-based cabinets, hang doors and drawers, and clean up. A walk-in takes one day; a dressing room with an island two to four. Walls behind removed wire shelving will show anchor holes unless your design includes back panels.
After
Walk the closet with the installer, test every drawer and light, and get the warranty paperwork. Most companies offer a free adjustment visit within 30 days.
